The 7 Automations That Make My Life 10X Easier

Tired of coming home exhausted and still having to cook, budget, edit videos, and remember everyone’s birthdays?

You’re not lazy. You’re just out of energy. Most people think being productive means doing more. But the truth is that sometimes less is more, and real progress comes from automating or delegating the boring stuff.

So here’s a list of the top 7 ways I automated or delegated things in my life and made myself more productive while doing less. By the end of this, you’ll have a game changing list of tools that save you hours each week.

#7: Automate your investing.

These days, everyone with a cell phone has the ability to grow their money through investing. The only barrier is not knowing how to start. So here are 4 easy ways anyone can start automatically investing in assets today:

Stock market – Open your investing app like Robinhood or Stash. Then set up an automatic transfer(even just $1) into something that grows over time. Set up a recurring “auto-invest” for an S&P 500 ETF like VOO or SPY. You can do this in almost any investing app. Start with $5/week.

Bitcoin – Use an app like Robinhood or Cash App. Set up a similar “auto-invest” for $5/week. Treat it like a tiny bill you pay yourself first.

Roth IRA – Open a Roth IRA at a brokerage like Vanguard, Fidelity, or Charles Schwab. Set a small recurring transfer from your bank account to the brokerage. Then set another “auto-invest” so that the app takes whatever is in your Roth IRA and puts it into an index fund without you thinking about it.

And if your job offers a 401k with a match, enroll in it. The money comes straight from your paycheck before you ever see it.

When the money lands in your investing or retirement account, leave it alone. Don’t treat that account like a savings account you can dip into. Over time, the money will grow or pay dividends. If you turn on automatic dividend reinvestment(most apps have this feature), those profits buy more shares automatically.

#6: Get your groceries delivered so you’ll actually cook

Sometimes I want to cook because I find it relaxing and enjoyable. But you know what I don’t enjoy? Going to the grocery store after work. If I’m tired and there aren’t enough groceries at home for me to cook a meal, I will order from Uber Eats almost 10 times out of 10 instead of going to a store.

The fix is to treat ordering groceries like ordering takeout.

Ordering groceries from a store on DoorDash takes about the same 10 minutes as ordering from a restaurant. The difference is that groceries usually cost less because the same money gets you more meals. $50 spent at the grocery store can get you dinner for 3 nights while the same $50(including fees and tax) at a restaurant just gets you dinner for 1 night.

Now when I come home and the fridge is empty, I don’t panic. I just tap a few buttons and the food shows up. No more fast food shame.

#5: Let someone else cook dinner so you don’t eat fast food again

You work all day until you’re tired, then get home and still need to eat. But the fridge is empty or you don’t feel like cooking tonight. So you open Uber Eats and spend $40+ on a burger and fries that makes you feel awful an hour later.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve done that, I’d never need to work a job again. If you’re anything like me and wish there was a less expensive solution, the fix is ordering pre‑made meals that actually taste good.

For meal services, I tried Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, and Factor. For me, Factor was the best by a mile. Factor gives me all protein, veggies, and good taste, plus the convenience of zero cooking. I just put a meal on my stove for 5 minutes and dinner is done.

It’s not cheap. But it’s still a lot less than Uber Eats or DoorDash if you use one of these apps on a regular basis.

#4: Automate your money tracking so you stop leaking cash

You think you know exactly how you’re spending your paychecks, but you don’t. I didn’t either until I downloaded an app called Rocket Money to track my spending habits.

The app tracks every subscription. It shows you when you’re overspending on stuff like Uber Eats or vending machine snacks. It even helps you cancel things you forgot you were paying for. I found a Netflix subscription I hadn’t used in 6 months because I thought I cancelled it. Now I’m saving $15/month because I finally let the subscription go.

For Rocket Money to track and categorize your spending, you set it up once. Then you check the app once a week to make sure you’re staying within your limits. That’s it.

#3: Use AI to think of gifts so you never show up empty‑handed

I can be thoughtful when I try. But when 3 birthdays and a holiday hit the same month, my brain shuts down. Thinking of gifts for my friends and family isn’t even fun at that point.

To get around this and avoid feeling burned out every holiday, I’ve started letting AI think of gifts for me.

I just copy the prompt below(inspired by the book “Giftology” by John Ruhlin), paste it onto an AI, fill in the blank where you see “(?)”, and let the technology do the hard work for me.

“Hey AI, please give a list of gift ideas for my considering the following rules and questions --- Rules: The gift must be something they’ll use 5+ times in the next month. Ideally it would be something their family, friends, or coworkers can benefit from too. No food or beverages. No gift cards. Nothing with my logo on it --- Questions: What do I know about their goals, problems, recent wins, likes, age, gender, or profession? - (?)”

The AI spits out 10 ideas. I pick one. Then I get it shipped to myself first, add a handwritten note, and send it. When I’ve come up with gifts this way, the person has always felt special. I’d recommend this to anyone, especially if you have a wife or girlfriend.

#2: Stop editing videos by hand and use software instead

I love making content. Writing blog posts, recording videos, and even coming up with captions are fun for me. But when it comes to video editing, I HATE that part. I find it so grueling and time consuming that I almost hired someone in the Philippines to do the work for me for $400‑$700 a month.

Then, I found a website called Descript for $35 a month.

It works better than a human editor would have and literally costs 10x less. With Descript, you edit the video like you’re editing a document. So you just need to be able to alter words, not videos. It’s not perfect, but it saves me hours.

If you hate editing like I do, just try Descript. Don’t even second guess it. You’ll save time and a pile of cash.

#1: Keeping in touch with friends and family

First, you’ll have to go through your phone’s contacts and decide who you want to keep in touch with. You DON’T need to keep in touch with everyone on your phone to maintain your connections.

Step 1 – Think about the groups you’ve been a part of in life. For me, the significant groups I can remember being a part of are: high school football & basketball, college track & field, each job I worked in my 20s, and relatives I’ve known my whole life. Write down each group that you've been a part of.

Step 2 – Looking at your list, the next step is to scroll through your contacts and pick 1 or 2 people per group that you’ll keep in touch with. Then write down their names.

Step 3 – Now that you’ve decided on who you’ll keep in touch with, you’ll need to decide on how often to keep in touch with them. For most people, you just need to reach out every 3 to 6 months. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to organize the people I wanna stay in touch with by the first letter of their first names. I organize them into groups. Those groups are:

1(ABC), 2(DEF), 3(GHI), 4(JKL), 5(MNO), 6(PQR)
1(STU), 2(VWX), 3(YZ)

Then, on the day that I go to send messages, I search “dice roll” on Google. Whatever number it lands on is the group I reach out to. This makes things random so it doesn’t seem robotic when I reach out to people. Plus it’s fun for me too.

Step 4 – Finally, you’ll need to move your setup from steps 1 through 3 over to a mass texting app.

In order to delegate communicating with people you know, you need an app that allows you to send an individual message to multiple people at once. I’m NOT talking about a group chat where multiple people receive the same message in the same text thread. Instead, here’s an example of what I mean:

You think of 10 people you haven’t talked to in a while.
You type one message like “Hey, haven’t seen you in a little while. How have you been?” and push send.
The message is sent to each of the 10 people individually, as if you had texted them the same message one by one.

The nice thing is that with an app like this, you just need to send one mass text per month and do a good job of responding when people message you back in order to keep in touch with your friends and family. One text per month, and you could be the most social, well connected person you know.

The app that I’ve used to do all of this is called “Reach”. You can find it by searching “Reach” on the app store or the google play store. Then download it. You’ll also need to download the Reach extension app.

The big step is to write a message and send it to one of your groups. Don’t think too much about what to say. Instead, just go to an AI app like ChatGPT and enter the prompt “Hey AI, I’m looking to message multiple people the same message, but separately. I need a message that can go to each person without saying their name but still seems personalized enough to not be weird. What can I say?”

And whatever idea it gives you, start with that and edit the message to fit what you’d normally say. The message I sent when I first did this was “Hey, it’s Nick. Just checking in because I haven’t talked to you in a while. How are you?”. And everybody responded to the message as if they just thought I had only messaged them. They had no idea that I had messaged a bunch of people at once.

Got a full-time job and still wanna stack extra income?

Most people think they need to quit their job first. That's a mistake. You can build other income streams while you're still clocking in 9 to 5. The trick isn't working more hours. It's getting your offers in front of people without burning your evenings.

The solution is simple. Post about what you're good at. Then let ads do the heavy lifting while you sleep, work out, or just relax.

By the end of this, you'll know how to turn any skill into a service, who to sell it to, and how to run tiny $5 ads that test if it's worth your time, all in your time after work.

Lesson 1: Start with a valuable skill

To get a second source of income, you'll need to sell something. The first step in selling is to gain an audience, and posting online is how you build an audience. So here's are 6 easy steps you can use to start posting on social media today.

Pick one skill you're good at. Just one thing you can teach or do for someone else. If you aren't sure what your valuable skill is, use my quick guide to decide what to focus on.
Go to an AI app and ask "what do people on reddit most ask about or have trouble with around the topic of (insert your skill)?"
Write down or screenshot the biggest problems and questions you see mentioned. Then pick one topic from your list
Next, take out your phone and record a video of yourself talking through an answer to the question or problem you picked for a topic.
If your phone doesn't have enough storage, use a laptop.
If the camera quality on your laptop is bad, you can use your phone's camera as the webcam with a free website called Iriun.com. Just search "Iriun webcam setup for pc" or "Iriun webcam setup for mac" on YouTube. I use this site myself. It just takes about 10 minutes to setup and you'll instantly be able to record videos with high camera quality.
Edit the video. If you only have a phone to edit with, I recommend using the "Capcut" app. This is my go-to when I am editing on my cell phone. But when I am able to edit using a laptop, I have found it infinitely easier to use a website called "Descript". You can edit with Capcut for free with limited features. Editing with Descript will cost about $40/month. If you find video editing grueling or unenjoyable, just use Descript. It's 100% worth the money and will make your life a lot easier.
Post the video. Good places to post your short form videos are TikTok, Facebook Reels, and YouTube Shorts.

Lesson 2: Package your skill so people actually want to buy it

Once you have some posts on social media, you'll have to answer the question "What do I sell to people?"

In short, the answer is this: You'll sell your skills to people. So the skill you choose to make content around is also the skill you'll sell. But first, you'll need to package it into something people want to buy. Typically, "packaging" something looks like making it into:

A product(a book, course, game, merch, something more creative)
A service(giving people your time)
A subscription(someone pays you for monthly access to your skill)

To start, you should sell your skill as a service. That means you do the skill for someone(you cook, they eat. You sell, they get the customers. You design, they get the logo). A service is the fastest way to start because you learn what your customers actually want while getting paid for your time. The two easiest ways to charge people money for access to your time(or service) are to:

Create a sign-up for paid 1 on 1 meetings through Calendly.
Offer your service as a "gig" on Fiverr.com.

After you've done a few services, you can make a product. That would probably look like a short book, a template, or a mini course(something people can buy once and keep forever). I personally started by self-publishing an e-book through Amazon Kindle.

In addition, you can offer a subscription for people who want more help than they got from using your product or service alone. That could be monthly coaching, weekly tips, or ongoing access to you. This works great for skills that can be taught, like painting lessons or fitness plans. If you don't know how or where to setup a subscription service, the best way I've personally found to do this is setting up a free website through Substack. Tip - Sell to rich people. If your service costs money, sell to people who have money. Rich individuals, small businesses, large companies, or schools are good places to look. Someone who's struggling will think about every dollar because it's necessary. But a business owner or someone with a lot of cash will say yes faster because they feel their time or results are worth more than your fee.

Lesson 3: Nobody can buy from you if they don't know what you're selling.

Now that you have some content online and a product or service, the next step is to make people aware of what you're selling. In other words, you'll need to do some marketing.

There are some different options for marketing your product or service. You can send cold emails. You can also cold call. But those take time, energy, and frustration. If you already have a full time or part time job, you might not have the time and energy after work that's required to do cold calls and emails consistently.

If you want a more efficient way to delegate the marketing, run ads. If you don't know how to run an ad online or haven't done this before, don't worry. I'll explain how to setup your first social media ad in the steps below:

Remember the video you posted in Step 1? Post 20 to 30 more of those videos talking about the problems and questions around your skill that you saw online.
Of your 20 to 30 total videos, look for any that got 2x your average views or more. So if the majority of your videos got 100 views, look for any videos with 200 views or more.
Download those high-performing videos from TikTok.
Post the same videos again on Facebook. But instead of posting them organically, make each post into an ad by pushing "Boost Post".
The "title" of the post should talk about whatever you're offering in the ad. So if you're offering a cookbook with over 100 recipes, the title should say something like "Get my 100+ recipe cookbook".
Finally, add a "learn more" or "click here" button to your ad that sends people to your product or service.

To start, set your budget to $5/day for 7 days. The first 7 days is just to see if the ad works well enough to put more money into. For the audience, just let Facebook pick it for you.

After a week, look at the results. If the ad made you money or broke even, run it again. If it lost money, tweak the headline or try a different video.

Lesson 4 - Give Them Free Stuff First

A problem I personally came across was that people clicked my ads, but they never bought my product or service after they looked at it. The biggest reason was that people don't feel safe buying from a person or brand they don't know is credible. And on Facebook, I was an unknown guy with no following and no reviews from someone who had already bought from me.

I needed a way for the people who clicked on my ad to know I was credible and could actually produce results around my skill. I needed them to feel safe that they'd get their money's worth if they bought from me. To do this, I stopped advertising my paid products and services. Instead, I started offering people free stuff that leads to my products and services.

For example, I sell an e-book on Amazon that teaches people to set their goals in a way that guarantees they'll reach the finish line instead of giving up early. It sells for $4.99. However, I took one of the chapters from the book and made it into a 7 page pdf. On the last page of the pdf, I added a message that says "Want more tips on the best way to hit your goal? Get the full book". Below that, I added a button that says "Click Here for More Goal Tips". It links to my book on Amazon. Since the pdf is so much shorter than the book, I'm willing to give it away for free.

Now, instead of making ads that talk about the book for $4.99, I make ads that talk about(and send people to) the free pdf. The pdf is short, so it's easy for people to consume. Best of all, it gives people a valuable snippet of the info they'd get in the paid book. So if they get to the end of the pdf, see I'm competent, and want more, they'll be a lot more likely to buy the book without feeling risk.

Tip - Don't put all your eggs in one ad. Run two different $5 ads at the same time. After a week, put the full $10 toward whichever one performed better. That's how you test without going broke.

And here's the part most people skip. After someone buys your service, don't disappear. Send a gift a month or two later. Not food. Not a gift card. Something they'll use five times or more. A nice mug with their name on it. A handwritten note. No logos. Send it unexpectedly, not right after they bought. That's how you turn a one-time buyer into someone who sends you referrals for years.

Stop guessing what to talk about. Go where people are already screaming for answers.

Open an AI and ask: “What do people on Reddit most ask about or have trouble with around [insert your skill here]?”

Take the top question. Go to Reddit and search that exact phrase. You will find real posts from real people describing their pain. Screenshot those pains or write them down.

Just like that, you have a list of topics. Each topic is a blog post or a short video waiting to be made.

💎Write down 10 questions that people in your skill area are asking.

For example,

If your skill is sales, people ask: “How do I handle rejection?” and “How do I close more deals?”
If your skill is cooking, people ask: “What are easy meals for beginners?” and “How do I meal prep?”
If your skill is driving, people ask: “How do I stay awake on long trips?” and “What are the best routes?”
If your skill is painting, people ask: “How do I choose the right paint?” and “How do I avoid streaks?”

Lesson 2: Record your answer instead of writing it from scratch

Now it’s time to make the first draft of your post. If your thinking “but I don’t know how to make videos” right now, don’t worry. You don’t need to be a social media star. You just need to do a little talking.

Videos must be quality to get attention, but you don’t need Hollywood equipment.

Pick one of your post topics from Reddit. Open CapCut or your phone’s camera and use vertical mode. Record yourself giving great answers and solutions. Keep it under 60 seconds. Edit lightly and add captions if you want. Post to TikTok or YouTube Shorts. Then repeat.

Over time, your only goal is to make each video slightly better than the last.

Lesson 3: Market Yourself

Next, you’ll need to keep posting these short videos related to the topics around your skill. Then, post the videos organically on YouTube Shorts and TikTok.

Make at least 30 of these videos. Of your 30 TikToks/Shorts related to the book, some of them will get significantly more views or engagement than the others. This doesn’t mean that the videos are viral at all. They just have to perform at least 2x or 3x better than my average video. All you need is something that performed better than your average.

Finally, add a “learn more” or “click here” button to your ad that sends people to your product or service.

My first mistake with the Facebook ads was putting all of my money behind the one video that got the most engagement organically. I thought that just because people loved the video, it had to lead to sales. And I bet everything on this.

Don’t be like me. Don’t bet on one video that you haven’t tested yet. Even a video that did well organically can flop when you put money behind it.

Here’s how to make your own free lead magnet:

Think about your skill. What’s the one thing people ask you most often? What’s the simplest, most valuable piece of advice you can give someone? Think about it, and make that into your lead magnet.

It could be:

A checklist of the most common mistakes people make in your skill area.
A simple guide or template that helps people get started.
A short video or audio recording that teaches one specific technique.
A worksheet or planner that helps people apply what you teach.

Keep it simple, valuable, and free.

At the bottom of your free guide, add a button that says “Want more help with [your skill]?” and link to a paid offer. This could be a coaching call, a full course, a consulting package, or a monthly service.

How they pay:

You give away the free lead magnet entirely for free. Right there in the free guide, they will see the value of your expertise immediately. At the end of the guide, you offer a paid package where you work with them directly. The package could be a one time fee or a monthly commitment. They only pay after the free guide shows them you can help.

If the free guide doesn’t help them, they will not buy the package. But if it does, they will gladly pay for more.

Start with blog posts

Use this template for your own writing:

Intro – Describe the problem, the solution, and what they will know by the end.

Step or Lesson 1 – Insert your first lesson.

Step or Lesson 2 – Insert your second lesson.

Step or Lesson 3 – Insert your third lesson.

Step or Lesson 4 – Insert your fourth lesson.

Step or Lesson 5 – Insert your fifth lesson.

Instead of writing the posts from scratch, save time. Go to ChatGPT and choose the option to speak your answer rather than type it. Record yourself speaking through an answer for each topic in your lead magnet’s. Then ask the AI to “please make a blog post out of my transcript following the outline I added.” Copy and paste the outline above into the same chat.

That gives you a rough draft. Edit it to sound like you. Make sure it has the correct information. Once you are happy, add a picture from Google or Canva and post it on LinkedIn as an article. You can also use Medium.com or Twitter/X.

Posting these on social media helps you see what people like best. Then take your best posts, copy the text into a Google Doc, and save it as a PDF. That PDF is what you can offer people for free.

When people sign up for your lead magnet...

When you use Facebook’s lead forms, you have the option to leave a message or link on the last page. I suggest leaving a link that goes to a Calendly signup page. Meet with anyone who signs up for 15 to 30 minutes. Get to know their challenges related to your skill. At the end, offer them your paid package if they need more help.

I Spent $800 on Ads, Made $2.92, Then Tried Something Different(Part 2)

Last time, I told you about the first two weeks of my new ad run.

Week 1: Zero leads from four ads at $5 a day.
Week 2: Eight leads from two ads at $10 a day.

The fix was swapping Linktree for Facebook Lead Forms. The lesson was to keep people on the platform and remove the trust barrier. That simple change turned 0 leads into 8.

But I wasn’t done breaking stuff.

Week 3: I tried something smart and broke everything.

After Week 2, I was just so happy to be getting leads that I hadn’t yet thought “what’s my process for converting new leads into customers?”

I had a working system and leads. But no customers.

So going into week 3, I decided to make 2 changes:

Change #1 - I had an idea. What if I offered a free 1-on-1 call at the end of the lead form instead of a PDF? That feels more personal, and I figured I’d have an easier time selling someone my book by speaking to them than sending emails.

So I changed the final page of my lead form. Instead of showing a “thank you” page with a PDF download button, I redirected people to a Calendly link. They would book a free strategy call with me directly.

Change #2 - I had heard online that people sign up for stuff more when it’s available

in a limited supply(”there are only 10 left” for example)
or for a limited time(”this deal will be gone in 3 days” for example).

Also, my video ad called “JOB SECURITY DOESN’T EXIST” had clearly outperformed the other videos I used in the first 2 weeks.

So for week 3, I decided to run that same video ad twice, but with different lead forms for each. On the first video ad, the lead form had the same wording as it did in week 2.

And the 2nd lead form was worded to tell people I had a limited supply of skill assessments(which was true because I have limited time in a day to finish each assessment).

I was proud of this. The changes felt like a real upgrade.

That said, I ran the ads for 3 days and got a whopping… zero leads. I spent about $66 during that time and not a single person completed the form.

I checked everything. The ads were running. People were clicking. But nobody finished.

The reason - after doing some research, I found out that Facebook’s lead forms don’t track external redirects as completions. When someone clicks that final “submit” button and gets sent to Calendly, Facebook counts it as a drop-off. They have no idea the person actually booked a call.

So my “upgrade” was actually a broken funnel.

Knowing this, I switched the form back to the PDF download on Thursday morning. Within a day, leads started coming in again.

Total spend for the fixed part of the week: $100.26. Total leads: 5.

The no-urgency version got 4 leads at $12.31 each. The urgency version got 1 lead at $51.03.

The lesson: Don’t redirect lead form completions to a third party booking page. Keep the final step simple. Give them the PDF.

Week 4: I tested a new video and added real urgency.

With the form fixed, I needed a fresh test.

The “JOB SECURITY DOESN’T EXIST” video was working. But I had another one called “3 Steps To Know What Skill You’re Good At” that performed well for me last year. So I swapped the videos.

Next, since the urgency-worded ad in week 3 got so few leads(1 lead for $50) and leads weren’t being captured in the first half of the week, I wanted to retest the urgency vs. non-urgency lead forms.

Finally, the 4th of July was coming up. So I changed the urgency-worded lead form to say…

Altogether, here’s what I tried for week 4:

I ran 2 video ads again(both using the “3 Steps To Know What Skill You’re Good At” video)
I ran the 1st video ad with the non-urgency version of the lead form
I ran the 2nd video ad with an urgency-worded version of the lead form based on the 4th of July.
I ran both ads at $10/day

After the first day of running the week 4 ads, the urgency ad had 3 leads at about $7 each. The no-urgency ad had 1 lead for about $27.

Seeing such a big difference in cost per lead, I paused the no-urgency ad and moved its budget to the urgency version.

This meant that after day 1, the urgency version of the ad ran at $20/day instead of the original $10/day.

By the afternoon on July 5th, the urgency ad had 12 leads at $9.25 each. That is my best performance yet.'

The lesson: So far, urgency based on a deadline(like an upcoming holiday) performs better than urgency based on a limited supply(I only have time or room for x submissions).

Week 4 Bonus: Still No Customers

I was extremely excited about my success with gaining new leads in weeks 2 and 3. But even with the new leads, I still had no answer to the question “what’s my process for converting new leads into customers?”

So in week 4, I tried building a system to turn the leads into buyers.

Step 1: The Immediate Follow-Up

The same day someone fills out the lead form, they get a personalized email breaking down their skill assessment. That email tells them exactly what their top skills are and which one gives them the most energy.

Step 2: Add Them to the Newsletter

Everyone who gives me their email gets added to my Substack newsletter, Goal Doctors. I send that out bi-weekly. It’s full of actionable tips on turning skills into income and other useful stuff for solopreneurs and small business owners.

Step 3: The 7 Day Email Sequence

After the initial follow-up email, I start a 7-day sequence. Each email walks through a different part of starting a business. By the last day of the sequence, people will have a functional small business based on their skill.

And in every single email, there is a link or button encouraging people to either:

Get the book ($4.99)
Get a paid subscription ($20/month or $200/year)

After 1 week of testing the email sequence, it got zero sales. So my next goal is to improve the newsletter and email sequence to convert interested people into customers.

Week 4 Bonus: The Pricing Lesson

By the end of week 4, I had a clear picture of my numbers.

I was spending about $140 a week on ads and getting around 10 leads per week.

Those numbers gave me a clear target.

If I could get just 1 out of every 10 new leads to buy something that nets me $140, I would break even on my ad spend for the week. Anything beyond that is profit.

So I built a value ladder based on that math.

1. Free Lead Magnet – This is the free skill assessment and PDF that people sign up for through the ads I’ve been running.
2. $4.99 Book – After someone signs up, I’ve made sure to offer them my book on goal setting. At that point, someone has already gotten value from the free assessment. So they may trust me enough to spend five bucks.
3. $20/month Substack Subscription – The main thing I’m selling people is a paid subscription to my Substack/newsletter called goaldoctors.com. Monthly subscriptions add up over time. If someone keeps their subscription for a year, that’s $240. But I wanted a better deal for people who commit longer.
4. $200/year Substack Subscription – In addition to the monthly plan for my paid Substack, I set up a yearly option for $200 because it covers almost a week and a half of my ad spend. Also, yearly subscribers save $40 opposed to paying month to month.
5. $700/hour 1-on-1 Coaching – This is the “high ticket” offer. I set it at $700 because that is five times my weekly ad spend. One coaching call covers five full weeks of ads. If I book one of these a month, I can keep the ads running without losing money while I help someone directly.

The results from weeks 1 to 3 gave me the stats I needed to set pricing. Now, I just need to make the follow-up sequence work.

Conclusion - Here’s What I Learned in Weeks 3 and 4

The system kept improving. But only when I tested the right things.

What didn’t work:
· Redirecting lead forms to Calendly. It kills the tracking and kills the leads.
· Generic urgency. “Only 10 spots available” did not perform as well as a real deadline.

What DID work:
· A simple PDF download as the final step(clean and trackable).
· Real urgency tied to a real date. People respond to deadlines they already know about.
· Testing a new video against the old winner. Do not assume the first winner is the final winner.

The Numbers So Far

Week Leads Spend Cost Per Lead
• Week 1 - 0 leads, $142.86 spent
• Week 2 - 8 leads, $120.09 spent, $15.01 per lead
• Week 3 - 5 leads, $166.54 spent, $33.31 per lead(this was with the broken lead form going to Calendly).
• Week 4 - 12 leads, $111.02 spent, $9.25 per lead

We went from zero leads to 12 leads at $9.25 each in less than a month. It’s a working system.

I Spent $800 on Ads, Made $2.92, Then Tried Something Different

The first time I ran ads, I burned $800 and made less than $20 back.

That’s a 97.5% loss, which was pretty discouraging. So I thought about my mistakes, made a new plan, and started a new run of ads.

Week 1 of my new ads, I still got nothing. But by Week 2, I had 8 leads at $15 each. By Week 5, I was getting leads at $9.25 each.

Here is exactly what changed and what it cost me to learn it.

Week 1: I ran 4 ads at $5 a day and got zero leads.

For the first week, my goal was to figure out what video I should advertise to get the best results. So I went onto my YouTube channel, picked my top 4 highest viewed YouTube Shorts, and used those.

Next, I tested the four videos as ads on Facebook. Each one got $5/day for 7 days. That is $20 total per day across all four.

The video titles were:

“JOB SECURITY DOESN’T EXIST”
“How to Spend Your Paychecks So Your Money Grows”
“Invest When Everyone Else is SCARED”
“Use This Hack to Save Money FAST”

Total spend for the week: $142.86. Total leads: zero.

All of the videos hit over 1,500 views. One got nearly 2,900 ThruPlays. People watched. Some even clicked.

But nobody signed up for my free lead magnet.

When people clicked the “Learn More” button attached to my ad, I sent everyone to a Linktree page. They landed there, filled in their name and email, agreed to receive emails, and downloaded a PDF called “The Guide to Your $100k Skill.”

That sounds reasonable, right?

Wrong.

Here is what I realized.

When someone scrolls Facebook, they feel safe. They know the platform. They trust it. When they click a link and leave Facebook, they enter a different place. That place does not have Facebook’s trust built in.

In hindsight, it didn’t matter how good my PDF was because people never got that far. They already felt curious. But asking them to jump to an entirely different page(the Linktree) to fill out a form introduced just enough friction to kill the conversion.

This was the issue.

Week 2: I kept the offer and changed the delivery.

To prove whether or not the Linktree was the issue, I tested out two changes for week #2.

Change #1 - In week 1, people would click on my ad and go to a Linktree page. For week 2, I swapped the Linktree for a Facebook Lead Form. Lead forms do the same thing as a Linktree signup. But the form popped up right inside the Facebook app. This meant no extra clicks, no leaving Facebook, and no trust barrier.

In the form, I asked people 3 questions about their skills. They gave me their email, and I sent a personalized assessment afterward.

Change #2 - In week #1, two of the videos clearly outperformed the others. “How to Spend Your Paychecks” and “JOB SECURITY DOESN’T EXIST” got more views and more clicks than the rest.

So I stopped the 2 lower performers. I took that $5 from each and moved it to the winners.

For my new setup, I had 2 ads at $10 per day each instead of 4 ads at $5 per day each. Same total daily budget. Just more concentrated.

The results: By the end of week 2, I had 8 new leads(people who gave me their email in exchange for a skills assessment), and I spent $120.09 to get them(that’s $15.01 per lead).

Of the 2 video ads I used, “JOB SECURITY DOESN’T EXIST” got 5 leads at $11.96 each. The other video got 3 at $20.09 each.

What I Learned in 2 Weeks

The ads worked. The offer worked. The only broken piece was the path from the ad to the lead.

What didn’t work:

Sending people outside Facebook to an unknown page.
Asking for name, email, and agreement before they got anything.

What did work:

Using native Facebook lead forms to keep people on the platform.
Taking budget from losers and putting it into winners.
A clear video that connected with the audience.

I Spent $800 on Ads and Made $2.92. Here’s What I Learned

Most people run ads to make sales. Then they lose money and stop instead of learning as they go.

I published my first book, “The 7 Day Game Plan”, on Amazon in the beginning of last year. I thought it was good enough the be a best-seller, so I put my money where my mouth was and spent some cash to advertise the book.

The result I expected was a lot of sales. Instead, I got a lot of lessons and just a few sales.

For the rest of this post, I'll share some of the lessons I paid for so you don't have to. You will see my exact Amazon and Facebook ad numbers. You will learn when to run ads, how to find the perfect keywords from a losing campaign, and why a free PDF works better than a paid link when nobody knows your name.

Lesson 1: Your first Amazon campaign is for finding keywords, not making sales.

My first campaign on Amazon got 47 clicks, 2 purchases, and cost $49. That’s a bad return.

But the good news was that when the campaign finished, Amazon gave me a search term report.

That report showed me exactly what keywords people typed in when they clicked on my book. I also saw which other products Amazon’s algorithm linked to my audience. So I took those keywords and started a second campaign targeting them directly.

The Result: The second time around I got three paid sales and about 20 unpaid downloads during a free promo.

The Takeaway: For your first Amazon ad campaign, don’t aim to get sales. Instead, just spend $5-$10 for 7 days and aim to get the data that will show you who to target on your 2nd campaign. Then, when you’ve started a more strategic second campaign, aim to get sales.

Lesson 2: Only pay for Amazon ads during Kindle discount promotions.

All of my paid sales came from Kindle countdown deals. Countdown deals are a one-week promotion where your book is offered exclusively on Amazon either at a discount or for free, not the full price.

Why did the discounts work? Because on Amazon, I was a new author with one book and no reviews. Since people don’t know me or my brand yet, buying at full price presented a risk. But a discounted price lowers the risk of paying for a book that isn’t valuable. Plus, people are more willing to pay when they feel like they’ll get a great deal.

I ran my first ad campaign without the Kindle countdown deal, and I got zero sales. However, when I applied the countdown deal to my second ad campaign I finally got my first sale.

The Takeaway: For Amazon ads, I could avoid wasting money by running campaigns only when my book was on sale, not when it was at full price.

Lesson 3: Run two Facebook ads at five dollars a day for seven days, then scale the winner.

Now, let’s transition to what I learned from advertising my e-book on Facebook.

To create the ads, I started by making some 30 to 60 second videos related to the topics in the book. Then I posted the videos organically on YouTube Shorts and TikTok.

Of my 20 to 30 TikToks/Shorts related to the book, about 5 of them got significantly more views or engagement than the others. This doesn’t mean that the videos went viral at all, but they performed at least 2x or 3x better than my average video. All you need is something that performed better than your average.

Next, I took the videos that did well on TikTok/YouTube and reposted them on Facebook. But this time, instead of posting them organically, I posted them as paid ads that led people to the book. Here’s an example of one of the TikToks above that I turned into an ad.

Don’t be like me. Don’t bet on one video that you haven’t tested yet. Even a video that did well organically can flop when you put money behind it.

Once I realized this, I changed my strategy and ran multiple ads(each with one of my 5 best performing videos) to see which worked best. This went a lot better. For example, one of the ads got a 13.44% click through rate(industry standard is 1% to 2%). It cost $31 over 7 days, and I got 600 clicks and 447 landing page views. To get each click, I only paid $0.07.

That was great attention for almost no money! So I doubled down on spending for that ad after the first 6 days.

The Takeaway: When I used the new approach to pick the best videos to put my money behind, I got better results with less stress and confusion. So when you post some videos organically and find the best performers, DON’T…

pick one
put all your money behind it
and hope for the best.

You’ll probably just waste your money. Instead, run two or three ads at $5/day each for one week. At the end of the week, review the performance. Then kill the losers, take the winner, and increase its daily budget.

Mini-lesson: Don’t set an end date on your ads. I made this mistake. I set an ad to run for seven days to see if it would perform well, and it did great!

So at the end of the seven days when the ad stopped, I went to restart it, or “Boost Again”. And since I knew the ad would perform well, I put almost twice the original amount of money behind it. But to my surprise, the ad didn’t perform great. It didn’t even do okay. It completely flopped and got less engagement than it did with the original smaller budget.

Why? The ad lost all the momentum when it stopped. And Facebook had to start over from zero with building up the momentum again.

So don’t give your ads a nearby “end date”. Instead, set your ad to run without one. Then, after seven days, manually come back and decide whether to stop it or not and adjust the budget. But don’t stop and restart the same ad because it might not perform as well the second time around, even if you increase your budget.

Mini-lesson: Add a call to action to organic videos you repost as an advertisement. I mentioned before that to create my Facebook ads, I would post videos organically on TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Then I’d take the best performing organic videos and repost them as advertisements.

The purpose of the organic posts was to see what would get the most engagement, not to sell the book. So I didn’t include any call-to-action in my TikToks and Shorts. But when I reposted some of those videos as ads, I needed them to include a message like “click below to learn more on setting goals” or “click here for the in-depth guide on setting goals”.

At first, I put a call-to-action at the end of my Facebook ad videos because it was the easiest place to insert a message. But as I reviewed more data from my ads, I realized that barely anyone watched past the first 15 seconds. And many of the people who viewed and clicked only watched for about 5 seconds. So no one was even seeing the call to action at the end of the videos because no one watches that far.

When I realized this, I stopped adding a call to action in my videos all together, and this didn’t cause any drop off in views or clicks. But going ahead, I will try editing the videos I use as ads to include a call to action in the first 3 to 5 seconds of the video where people will actually see it.

Lesson 4: If nobody knows your name, give away a free lead magnet first.

People clicked my Facebook ads. They even landed on my page and clicked. But they didn’t buy. I believe it’s because I am currently an unknown author. And if nobody knows who you are, they might not buy your product because they aren’t sure you can provide great results in exchange for their cash.

With this in mind, my biggest regret from the $800 in ads is that I didn’t ONLY offer and link to a free lead magnet instead of sending people directly to the book or the book’s landing page. Examples of a “free lead magnet” could have been:

a short PDF with only the first 3 chapters of the book
a short challenge I could take from the book
a checklist I could take from the book

I was good at getting attention and clicks, but not conversions. So if the issue stopping people from buying was fear of risk, a solution is to only offer them free stuff upfront. Getting something for free is a lot less risky than paying for it.

In the future, my focus will be to create free lead magnets that would guide people to my paid book on Amazon. It’s like Texas Roadhouse advertising their rolls. If you go to the restaurant, you get the rolls for free. But to some people, the rolls and butter are so good it gets them in the door. And once they’re in the door, they will probably spend on a meal or at least an appetizer. So advertising free rolls would result in paid sales.

Mini-lesson: Show proof of the results you can provide in your ad or video… Another big reason people may avoid buying from an unknown brand or author is that they don’t have proof of results you’ve already gotten.

One thing that might have gotten the people who clicked on my ads to actually buy would be to show more proof of results my book leads to. The book didn’t have any reviews or testimonials online to serve as proof. So instead, I could have used general stats about the results of people who plan their goals versus people who don’t.

For example, I found online “researchers generally estimate that people with a structured plan are roughly 2-3x more likely to follow through than people who just ‘want’ the goal without a defined process. That doesn’t guarantee success, but it massively improves the odds”. I also saw that Tom Landry(first head coach of the Dallas Cowboys) said “setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan”.

The lesson is this: if people don’t have proof of results from me or my book yet, I can give them proof from someone more famous or credible than me like “researchers” or Tom Landry(who probably retired from coaching before I was even born).

Conclusion: I didn’t make a profit. I made a game plan.

I spent two $800 on ads between Amazon and Facebook, and I sold maybe $20 worth of books. But in the end, now I know exactly what to test for the next $800 I spend. For example, I learned to:

· Run Amazon ads only during discount promotions.

· Look for winning keywords from a losing campaign.

· Run 2 Facebook ads at five dollars a day for one week.

· Never set an end date on a test ad.

· Use a free PDF and a Facebook lead form to build trust.

· Always lead from free value to paid value inside the magnet.

Next time I launch a book or digital product, I won’t guess. I’ll spend a little, let the data tell me the best direction, and scale only what works.
